If you can read about those topics then I highly recommend you pick this up. This poetry collections deals with some triggering, but important subjects such as sexual assault, in a direct way that is needed given the prominence of rape culture in society. I was crying whilst writing my brief Goodreads review. Honestly, just thinking about this book now and re-reading the highlights in my Kindle is making me want to tear up. There is nothing like someone putting exactly how you feel into words. I felt every emotion Rupi was pouring out. There were actual tear drops on my Kindle. I was in tears from the start to the finish. It’s a raw and honest emotional roller coaster from the very first poem. Milk and honey is told in four parts – hurting, loving, breaking and finally healing. I understand how dramatic that sounds, but Rupi’s words burned their way into my soul and they have made an imprint on my heart that will stay with me forever. I found this book from a post that Lindsey A Piece of Paradis made and I’m so glad I decided to read this because I honestly feel like my life is changed. To be honest, I’m making this post more as a gush fest because I need to share how this poetry collection made me feel thousands of indescribable emotions.

I don’t know how to write a review for this collection of poetry that can adequately describe the journey of heartache and inspiration that you go on. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look. The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. She always wanted to tell him that she didn’t blame him for his distance but never could. When she got older, she would try to talk with her father over the phone, but their conversations would usually just consist of small talk. She related to her father through their shared inability to share their feelings with one another.
Because of their constant fighting, she couldn’t tell if her mother was scared of her father or in love with him. All at once, she was the thing that kept them together, and the thing that split them apart. This difference in their approach to attention and affection caused her parents to fight. While Kaur had to beg her father to have a relationship, her mother showered her with love and affection. In fact, she began to develop angry tendencies like those of her father. She began to associate love with aggression. He claimed this was out of love, but this confused Kaur. When they would speak, her father often screamed at her. Instead, there are just alcoholics who fail to parent.
She explains that there’s no such thing as an alcoholic parent. Kaur states that your father is supposed to be the first man you love, but that she didn’t have that experience because she never connected to her father. She felt as though people expected a lot from her while actively working against her instead of supporting her. When asked about her tendency to show kindness, Kaur explains that people weren’t kind to her growing up and she doesn’t want to make anyone else feel the way she felt.
